Accomodation & Rates

Each of &Beyond Phinda Forest Lodge‘s 16 suites are built on stilts, and appear to float between the forest floor and the towering torchwood trees in the intensely canopied rare sand forest. Inventively designed in a style affectionately known as Zulu Zen, each handcrafted, glass-encased suite was constructed without damaging or removing a single tree in the forest. The interiors boast a minimalist flair that incorporates high-gloss wooden floors, richly tactile fabrics and brightly accented Zulu artefacts. The suites feature luxurious ensuite bathrooms with slate hand basins and viewing decks where guests can drink in the sight of graceful nyala and duiker in the dappled shade of the forest.

Beginning with their ground-breaking conservation achievements during the original restocking of Phinda Private Game Reserve, andBeyond has continued to take part in a number of conservation successes. Their approach to the creation of this reserve, from the underlying conservation issues to its interaction with the community, has proven to be the foundation on which all subsequent projects were to be built. Since then andBeyond Phinda have embarked on a variety of pioneering conservation initiatives, both in Africa and beyond. andBeyond’s conservation engine is driven by one thing only and that is creating extraordinary experiences for their guests. Without guests, andBeyond simply cannot be successful in extending and sustaining green frontiers. To fund many of the projects that help to continue the conservation of Phinda’s endangered species, guests are invited to join in the routine monitoring or research projects that are essential to the survival of the reserves’ species’.

Depending on which research activity is available at the time, you will have the opportunity to assist in either a rhino notching or a rhino de-horning. Pangolin conservation experience

Participate in our one-of-its-kind Pangolin conservation experience, and support us in this groundbreaking initiative to re-establish Temminck’s ground pangolin (the most trafficked mammal on earth) in a region where they have gone locally extinct.

Intensive monitoring, using VHF and GSM/UHF tracking tags, is a core element of this project. Travel with our specialist conservation team as they locate the animal, replace the GSM/UHF tag, do general health checks, and gather crucial data. You’ll be with them as they locate the pangolin and set about the replacement of the tag. During this procedure, the team will also conduct a general health check, take body measurements and gather other research data: a precious opportunity for you to observe the unique features and adaptations of the pangolin at a close distance. The pangolin will then be released, and, provided it is relaxed with our presence, you’ll be able to follow it, and observe its behaviour and feeding. Your experience will take place in the afternoon or evening in winter, or at night in summer.

This path-finding project, in partnership with the African Pangolin Working Group,  is not only the first of its kind for pangolin worldwide but is also key to the long-term survival of the species.

ZAR 30 000 (max 6 people)

*This experience is available at an additional cost and is subject to availability. The activity is scheduled to coincide with the required periodic replacement of the monitoring tags and will take place in the afternoon or evening in winter, or at night in summer. If less than 6 guests a private vehicle needs to be booked. Guests will unfortunately not be allowed to touch or handle the animals.
